Farm and Sustainability Project | Hope Orphanage, Ethiopia

TCI has undertaken the project of establishing a farm that will not only feed the residents, but will over time produce a surplus that can be sold with proceeds used to meet other orphanage needs. Moreover, the kids and the community learn farming techniques and basic nutrition. The project is nearing completion with great results. A substantial cow barn for up to 20 cows and calves has been constructed, and nine cows, three calves, along with one baby bull, are happily in residence. They are providing sufficient milk to feed all the children and staff, with a surplus being sold.  A poultry shed now houses over 100 chicks and chickens, and fresh eggs are plentiful. Our new vegetable garden is providing fresh produce, and we are now awaiting fish for the fish pond.

Enough equipment has been purchased for care of the animals and milking functions, but we are still in need of a good farm vehicle, an irrigation system for the vegetable garden and fodder crop for the cows. This type of project goes well beyond treating the symptoms of poverty, malnourishment, sickness and inadequate facilities for children, as it also addresses the route causes of the problems and eliminates them for the future.

Community and Education Center | El Rosario, Honduras

Government schooling in Honduras is provided only through the sixth grade, and in conjunction with ACTS, we are dedicated to finding ways to extend the educational experience for children. To this end, we are building a community center for El Rosario and its surrounding villages. It will house a regional library and education center that will serve as the focal point for young adults to improve literacy, learn new technical and agricultural skills, and train for the leadership roles of the future.

A plot of land that now holds an abandoned building has been acquired, and the restoration project is underway. ACTS, will send “Teacher Teams” of experienced American teachers to work with and train teacher counterparts in the village. They have already established a successful snacks program, created school gardens, brought water to school buildings, and provided books and supplies.  TCI will support these and other initiatives, particularly those related to the Community center, to help advance the education of village children.

Organization & Management

The overall management, coordination and project implementation is the responsibility of the local people and leaders of these communities in close consultation with The Children's Initiative. We demand strict accountability, and ensure that all funds are well spent.
